BAcc (Hons) Accountancy and Business Law

I wanted to come to the University of Stirling because of its status for sporting excellence and I knew that I wanted to do a business related degree so the Stirling Management School was the obvious choice. It has a great reputation and highly rated professors which was apparent in my four years here.

I was offered so many opportunities as a result of studying at Stirling. I was able to balance playing sport with my academic commitments as there were no classes on a Wednesday afternoon when matches are played.

Academically, the career development centre offer advice on applying for jobs, interviews, assessment centres and CV’s and I was able to use their advice to successfully gain a summer internship at a leading accounting firm. This then led to being offered a graduate job with the same company.

In third year I gained a place on the Stirling exchange programme and studied abroad in America for one semester. Without the help of the hard-working exchange programme team this wouldn’t have been possible and I was also awarded a scholarship to aid with the costs of my flights and visa.

I really liked that the course was so flexible. I was able to change degree course from accounting and business management to accounting and business law because I really enjoyed the law modules I completed in first year. Moreover, the course itself is an ICAS accredited degree meaning that I have obtained exemptions from some of the professional qualification exams after university. This was a really important part of the course for me and we were always made aware of what was required in the modules to gain the exemptions.

The modules themselves were challenging and interesting and the professors were obviously very knowledgeable in their subjects which made the course stimulating and enjoyable. Another aspect of this course that I liked was that it didn’t require a dissertation because it is a joint degree. This meant I had more time to focus on my modules as well as being able to apply for internship schemes and graduate jobs.

The University of Stirling is a fantastic place to meet friends, live on a beautiful campus that has everything you need within walking distance and incredible sporting facilities. The courses are very varied and interesting and will teach you everything you need to know to be successful. The flexibility you are allowed in choosing your degree and being able to change it if needed is a real benefit.

My studies have definitely prepared me for my future career as I have already gained a graduate job in the same field as my degree. We completed modules with very relevant coursework including reports that required Excel spreadsheets, calculations and graphs on Minitab software and essays on topics such as the current graduate recruitment situation in the accounting profession. I have gained skills in writing essays and reports, numeracy skills, accounting specific skills through learning how to create a set of financial statements and communication skills through presentations. I am sure that I will use all of the skills that I developed at university in my future career.

I had the most amazing four years studying at Stirling and would highly recommend the university and this course to any students who are interested. Stirling is its own little bubble that is full of life. It is a small university in a small city but this is what makes it special and enjoyable for the students as we become our own community on campus and in the surrounding areas. You get to know everyone and meet so many people from around the world. I felt like I was part of something at Stirling and I will always cherish the memories I made here.
