Student placements and projects

Our students are looking for work experience related to their studies throughout the year. By welcoming a Stirling student into your business, you’ll be gaining a valuable asset to help you tackle a specific project or need, as well as building relationships with the next generation of leaders.

What skills can our Big Data students offer your business?

Our Big Data students have varied backgrounds – some have only recently graduated from their first degree and some are returning to education having already been in work. They study programming, data analytics, databases (relational and NoSQL), cloud computing (Hadoop and Spark), machine learning, maths and statistics. They can program in Python and SQL.

Examples of previous projects

Previous projects and topics undertaken by our Big Data students include:

  • Creation of a demonstrator application to secure and validate qualifications using distributed ledger technology (blockchain)
  • Handwriting Recognition Using Machine Learning
  • Preventing subscription termination using machine learning
  • Analysing and modelling pressure data in a water network
  • Recommender Systems based on Natural Language Processing
  • Calculation and Optimisation of Finished Product Safety Stock Inventory
  • Understanding your "data body": Accessing, visualising, and communicating your digital footprint

When do students undertake their project?

Big Data students are generally available for projects from June - September. Our students start looking for project opportunities early in the year, so project scopes from employers should be submitted as early in the year as possible.
