Adopt an artwork terms and conditions

Ownership and display of artworks 

All artworks remain the property of the University of Stirling. The University reserves the right to display, store, relocate, or loan artworks to other institutions, and to remove them from display for conservation, research, or operational purposes without prior notice.

Adopted artworks may not be on public display at the time of adoption. If an adopted artwork is removed from display within three months of adoption, the University will contact the supporter to offer the opportunity to select an alternative artwork.

Nature of adoption

Adoption of an artwork is symbolic and does not confer ownership, rights, or control over the artwork.

Non-exclusivity

Adoption is non-exclusive. Multiple supporters may adopt the same artwork.

Donations and payments

Adoption is linked to a voluntary donation to the University of Stirling Art Collection Fund. A minimum donation of £120 per year is required to adopt an artwork.

Donations are typically made as recurring gifts and will continue unless and until the donor chooses to cancel or pause their support by contacting the University. Recognition is provided only while the minimum donation level is maintained. The University reserves the right to withdraw or withhold recognition if a donation is cancelled, paused, or falls below the required level.

All donations support the care and conservation of the University of Stirling Art Collection, as well as exciting new acquisitions and the Artist in Residence programme.

Refunds

Donations are non-refundable except in exceptional circumstances, which will be considered at the sole discretion of the University of Stirling. Any refunds will only be made to the original donor.

Recognition

Any recognition associated with adoption (including acknowledgements or communications) have no monetary value.

During the period of an artwork’s support by a donor, we may acknowledge the support of adopted artworks on indoor display with acknowledgement labels. Sculptures and outdoor artworks will not carry physical labels; instead, recognition will be provided on a dedicated Art Collection webpage.

All recognition is subject to change and may be amended or withdrawn at any time.

Changes to the programme

The University reserves the right to amend, suspend, or withdraw the Adopt an Artwork programme, or any aspect of it, at any time.
