MenB vaccination

MenB vaccination programme is now open for first-time undergraduates

The free meningococcal B (MenB) vaccination programme is now available for eligible young people across the UK ahead of the 2026/27 academic year.

The MenB vaccine helps protect against serious infections caused by meningococcal group B bacteria, including meningitis and septicaemia.

The free MenB vaccine is available to first-time undergraduate university entrants aged under 25 starting university in the 2026/27 academic year, including international students.

Getting vaccinated

The vaccination programme has now begun across health boards throughout the UK.

For the best protection, two doses of the MenB vaccine are required, given at least 28 days apart. If possible, students should receive both doses before travelling to university.

Students living in Scotland

Students living in Scotland can find information about getting vaccinated in their local area on the NHS inform website.

Students currently living in England, Wales or Northern Ireland

Students currently living in England, Wales or Northern Ireland should follow the guidance available from their local NHS services:

International students

International students should aim to receive both doses at least two weeks before starting their course – and should speak to their local health provider for further details. If this is not possible before travelling to Scotland, they will be able to receive one or both doses after they arrive.

Know the signs

Meningococcal group B disease is rare, however, can develop rapidly and become life-threatening. It is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of meningitis and to seek medical help promptly if you are concerned.

If you are worried about your own health or someone else's, seek medical advice immediately. In a medical emergency, call 999.
