About me

Richard is Professor of Media Sport in the Division of Communications, Media and Culture in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. He has wide experience as a peer reviewer for publishers, international journals and research councils, and is on the editorial board of Communication and Sport. He has conducted research funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the British Academy, the Carnegie Trust, Creative Scotland, the Scottish Government and the Big Lottery Fund.

His latest book, BBC Sport in Black and White (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016) provides the first in-depth study of the formative history (1937-1967) of televised sport on the BBC and is based on thousands of documents from the BBC's Written Archives and interviews with senior producers and commentators of the period. The book was awarded the prestigious Lord Aberdare Literary Prize by the British Society of Sport History.
