2008: PhD in Earth observation - University of Stirling
Our research group:
I am a lead member of the Laboratory for Optical Biogeochemistry and Remote Sensing (LOCHS) in Biological & Environmental Sciences at the University of Stirling. More information on our research expertise and activities is available here:
My research interests lie in the use of remote sensing for studying ecosystem responses to environmental change at multiple spatial and temporal scales. My group uses data acquired from near ground sensors as well as those mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles, aircraft and satellites to deliver new insights into ecological processes and function in a range of environments including drylands, wetlands, peatlands, estuaries and lakes. We work with high spatial resolution hyperspectral imagery through to global observations from polar-orbiting satellites and the integration of such data into numerical and process-based ecosystem models.
Our research group has attracted over £1.5M in REF-eligible research income since 2011. I am PI for the NERC INCIS-3IVE project on the development of methods for the validation of satellite observations over lakes. I am also Co-PI on the £2.4M NERC GloboLakes project and lead a work package on satellite validation over lakes (http://www.globolakes.ac.uk). Internationally, I am PI on the European Commission (EC) FP7 INFORM (Improved monitoring and forecasting of ecological status of European INland waters by combining Future earth ObseRvation data and Models; http://copernicus-inform.eu) and Co-I on the EC FP7 DANCERS project (DANube macroregion: Capacity building and Excellence in River Systems: http://www.dancers-fp7.eu).
I am also lead member of a European Space Agency (ESA) Sentinel-3 Validation Team (S3VT) for lakes. I am a ESR member of the Management Committee of an EU CyanoCOST COST Action (ES1105) and an Associate Partner in the EC FP7 GIONET project (http://www.gionet.eu/) and PI on the Algal Blooms Project funded by the Environment Agency. I have published 14 papers in ISI-listed peer-reviewed journals since 2008 and currently supervise 2 post-docs and 7 PhD students in Earth observation and related fields.
