Our AMBA-accredited MSc Business and Management (MBM) course, allows you to gain the knowledge and skills you need to be an inspiring, effective and resilient manager. We combine management theory with developing your practical management skills, and our course is taught by internationally recognised subject experts.

Our MBM focuses on operations and strategic management, and explores the need for managing limited resources effectively, with maximum business impact. This is the ideal course if you're looking to take your first steps into management. We cover the major functions of organisations – accounting, marketing, operations, people and talent management. Finance and economics are integrated through our strategic orientation.

We aim to create industry leaders, managers and entrepreneurs, who're confident in the use of business analytics tools and critical thinking abilities. This allows for better and informed decision making in your management career.

On this masters course there’s an emphasis on entrepreneurship, innovation and strategic management. You’ll also develop an appreciation of corporate social responsibility, ethical decision making and managing change.

You’ll have the chance to take part in industry visits, as well as undertaking consultancy projects with businesses across the public, private and non-profit sectors. This allows you to integrate the knowledge and skills from your Masters degree to solve a real business challenge. Your best-practice knowledge will put you in the perfect position to help a business looking for a solution to a problem or a new perspective on a strategy. Places on these projects are competitive and involve interviews with the host company. At the end of the project you’ll be able to present your recommendations and a high-quality piece of research or consultancy.

Our Masters in Business and Management course is accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), the international impartial authority on postgraduate business education. Established in 1967, it aims to raise the profile of business education and the Master of Business Administration (MBA) qualification in UK and Europe.

  • Academic requirements

    A minimum of a second class Honours degree or equivalent. Applicants without these formal qualifications but with significant appropriate/relevant work/life experience are encouraged to apply.

    Other routes of entry

    INTO University of Stirling offers a Graduate Diploma for those students who do not meet the required criteria for this course. If you successfully complete the Graduate Diploma in Business, Finance and Sport and meet the required progression grades, you'll be guaranteed entry onto this Masters degree.

  • English language requirements

    If English is not your first language you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your English language skills:

    • IELTS: 6.5 with minimum 5.5 in each skill
    • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): Grade C or above
    • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): Grade B or above
    • Pearson Test of English (Academic): 60 with a minimum of 51 in each component
    • IBT TOEFL: 90 with no sub test lower than 17

The full-time MSc Business and Management consists of two 15-week semesters of taught modules and a three-month dissertation period.

When you successfully complete the taught element of the course you’ll be awarded a Diploma. You can then continue for the award of the MSc by completing a 12,500-word dissertation or undertaking a consultancy project with a Scottish business.

Course Details

  • Teaching

    Teaching is carried out through lectures, seminars, guest speakers, article discussion groups, and presentations. You’ll go on insightful industry visits as well as having the change to work on consultancy projects developed in collaboration with businesses across the public, private and non-profit sector.

    Senior executives from the private, public and third sectors, as well as entrepreneurs, engage throughout the year with our postgraduate students. There’s also a series of guest lectures and workshops which provide many networking opportunities.

  • Key staff

    Dr Tom Forbes spent six years working in the NHS as a radiographer before entering academia. He has over 20 years teaching strategic management to undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has also delivered strategic management and change management courses and acted as a consultant to Local Authorities and the National Health service. His current research interests include the integration of health and social care services and managing change in complex organisational settings.

    If you’re domiciled in Scotland, you may be eligible to apply to the Students Award Agency for Scotland (SAAS) for a loan of up to £10,000 to cover your tuition fees and associated living costs. Students domiciled in the EU can also apply for tuition fee support, although may not be eligible to receive funding to support living costs.

    If you're domiciled in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, you should be eligible to apply for a loan from your regional body.

    English students apply for a loan of up to £10,000 per year as part of the UK Postgraduate Loan Scheme, Welsh students can apply for a non-means tested loan of up to £10,280 from the Welsh Government and Northern Irish students are eligible to apply for support of up to £5,500.

    *Fees for students who apply for a Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate will be paid on a pro-rata basis.

    If the course is taken over two years then the fee will be split evenly over the two years. Fees are not pro-rated for students who enrol on a Masters course and decide to exit with a Postgraduate Diploma - the full fee is charged.

  • Additional costs

    If you choose to attend your graduation ceremony, you will be liable for an additional charge. There is no charge if you wish to graduate in absentia. Learn more about additional fees.

  • Cost of living

    If you’re domiciled in the UK, you can typically apply to your relevant funding body for help with living costs. This usually takes the form of student loans, grants or bursaries, and the amount awarded depends upon your personal circumstances and household income.

    EU and overseas students won’t normally be able to claim living support through SAAS or other UK public funding bodies. You should contact the relevant authority in your country to find out if you’re eligible to receive support. .

  • 98% of our postgraduate leavers are in employment or further study within six months of leaving (Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey 2015/16)

    Advance your career with work experience

    On our MBM you’ll have the opportunity to enhance your career prospects by taking part in work based projects, designed to prepare you for your first steps into management.

    Before you start your MSc course, you'll also have the opportunity to take part in our Flying Start leadership Programme. Throughout our two-week programme, we'll challenge your perspective of culture and develop your self-awareness, as well as team-working, problem-solving and presentation skills.

    Consultancy projects

    If you’re seeking to enhance your employability and add value to a business client you’ll have the opportunity to undertake a 3-month consultancy project over the summer, as an alternative to the traditional dissertation.

    Consultancy projects allow you to work with an organisation to investigate a ‘real-world’ issue, enhance your transferable business skills and make professional connections that may lead to a job offer in the future. Current clients range from start-up businesses to international organisations in public, private and not-for-profit sectors.

    Making the Most of Masters (MMM)

    MMM is a strategic collaboration between business organisations, universities, enterprise agencies, and post-graduate Masters levels students. MMM helps offer work based projects as an alternative to a traditional Masters dissertation. The projects are solution focused and address real research needs within an organisation.
