About me

About me

I joined the University of Stirling in 1989. Prior to that I had studied for an MA at the University of Warwick and for a PhD at the University of Manchester. I was appointed Senior Lecturer in 1996 and Professor of Retail Management in 1999.Since that time I have held a number of positions within the University, including the Director of IRS and Chair of the Retail Division. Research Interests Research Group: Institute for Retail Studies. A significant proportion of my academic career has been involved in the area of external engagement both in the UK and Internationally. This remit has included a broad spectrum of activities including international student recruitment and marketing, management development and study tours, launching undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in overseas markets and helping to establish a national training academy in South Africa. In the last few years I have been involved in developing transnational collaborations and have worked at a national level with Governments, Statutory Bodies and a range of funding providers. I was also responsible for establishing and operating the University's first permanent overseas teaching and research facility in Singapore. Like a number of my colleagues at this esteemed institution, I am Welsh and an avid fan of rugby (no, it was not a red card). Despite continuing protests from every part of my creaking body, I still make a somewhat ludicrous attempt to run with the oval ball and turn out whenever possible for Hillfoots RFC. I am a keen wildlife photographerwww.jurong-photography.com, enjoy hillwalking and am slowly becoming more adept with the fishing fly.

Research (1)

At the risk of being labelled ‘rather sad’ one of my main research interests has been in the expanding area of airport retailing. Working with an industry colleague a successful public / private sector collaboration has over the years resulted in a number of academic publications, trade presentations and even a book on the subject. In addition, my research interests have also focused upon the theme of rural retailing and the issues of supplying consumers who live on remote island communities. I have been interested in the problems of sustaining a retail presence in these areas and the difficulties that island residents have in accessing goods and services.
