Stirling athletes hit record medal total at Glasgow 2026

Athletes from the University of Stirling - Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence - won five more medals at the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday to take their Glasgow 2026 tally to 17, surpassing the record 16 won at Birmingham 2022.

Duncan Scott, Angharad Evans and Keanna MacInnes each won a bronze medal for their brilliant performance with Scotland in the Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay - as did Dean Fearn and Lucy Grieve, who swam the heats earlier in the day.

Matthew Ward, who trains at Bath Performance Centre, kicked off Scotland's relay final with a strong 53.55 backstroke leg - before passing over in second place to the Stirling trio.

Breaststroke specialist Angharad Evans was impressive as she maintained second for Scotland - behind Australia - with a time of 1:04.52, before Keanna MacInnes posted a 57.60 in the butterfly. With Scotland now sixth, Duncan dived in for the anchor leg and had it all to do - but his 48.03 freestyle saw him claw his team back into the medals with a 3:43.70. Scotland finished third behind Australia in first (3:40.46) and South Africa in second (3:42.61), and ahead of fourth-placed Canada (3:44.23).

Further medal opportunities

The University has sent a record 22 athletes to the Games, representing six different countries across four sports. The bronze takes Stirling to 17 medals for Glasgow 2026 - with further podium potential on the final day of swimming and wheelchair basketball today (29 July), and in judo on Sunday, 2 August. 

In swimming, Angharad Evans will be hoping to add to her gold medal from earlier in the week after qualifying fastest for tonight's Women's 200m Breaststroke Final, while Tom Dean (England) and Jack McMillan (Northern Ireland) will battle it out in the Men's 200m Freestyle Final. Keanna MacInnes will swim in the Women's 200m Butterfly Final and Dean Fearn in the Men's 50m Butterfly Final.

There is also Stirling interest in this morning's Men's and Women's 4x100m Medley Relay heats - with Evan Jones and Holly McGill representing Scotland, Peter Allen swimming for the Isle of Man and Jack McMillan for Northern Ireland. Further Stirling involvement is expected in tonight's final. 

In the 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball Semi-finals, Stirling's Shayne Humphries will compete for Scotland against Australia this afternoon, with Gold and Bronze medal matches following later this evening - while judoka Gabriella Wood will compete for Trinidad and Tobago in the +78kg category on Sunday (2 August).
