Abstract
On 13 November, Professor David Price FRSE, Chair of the RSE’s Africa Working Group, welcomed delegates to a workshop on: Scotland-Africa: Enhancing Academic Partnerships. Featuring presentations and posters from representatives from the African Academy of Science, the Scottish Government, the University of Stirling, the University of Edinburgh, Queen Margaret University, St Andrews University, Glasgow Caledonian University, the University of Aberdeen, and the National Museums Scotland, the event aimed to provide an overview of the different activities and engagement between the Higher Education sector in Scotland, and that in Africa. As Scotland’s Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) continue to reflect on their past relationships with organisations in different parts of the vast and diverse African continent, so too are they developing positive and innovative projects and partnerships with individuals and institutions across African countries. What does this engagement look like? Who are the people driving change? Where are activities taking place, and what challenges and opportunities have emerged? How might HEIs and research organisations across Scotland learn from each other to better design teaching, research, and broader engagement with African institutions? Based on these questions, the Africa Working Group undertook a recent scoping project to capture a snapshot of current activity. The results generated a remarkable picture of activities between Scotland’s universities and a selection of professional and research bodies and African institutions. A report has now been compiled, which recommends establishing more regular connections between Scottish institutions with significant ties to African institutions to guide future collaboration, learn from each other, and identify common programmes.
