About me

About me

I went to film school in Colombia but decided that I liked history better, so I got my PhD at Glasgow in 2012 with a thesis on early film distribution in Scotland. I then worked as a research assistant for an AHRC-funded project on Early Cinema in Scotland, and joined Stirling as a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in 2015, to carry out a research project on film exhibition in non-permanent venues. I am now a lecturer and mainly teach core undergraduate classes.

Research

I am interested in media as something people do. In particular, I've looked at cinema as an activity that involves collaboration and shared spaces. I am fascinated by the moments of uncertainty before institutional conventions get established, or at the unruly margins of the culture industries. Previously I have worked on early cinema, film distribution, and historical audiences in Scotland and Colombia. I have an interest in film exhibition as a practice in borrowed, temporary or multi-purpose spaces, including 'pop-up' cinema, travelling exhibition, and film clubs. I am also very interested in archives and the re-use of media, and I am thinking about how to frame this in relation to questions of sustainability and justice. Get in touch if you want to talk about archive documentaries! Thinking about the geographies of ‘useful’ cinema has led to my current research interest, which is on the role of moving images in transnational histories of extraction. Currently I am researching how film and video were used to enable and to resist the decline of coalmining in Scotland, in parallel with the emergence of open-cast mining in Colombia in the 1980s. This links with an interrogation of public and corporate audiovisual archives as sites of extraction, which enable certain images and sounds to be commoditised. I am thus interested in the trajectories of these images and sounds of extraction in their primary uses as tools of persuasion and administration, and their secondary uses as spectacle.
