About me

About me

I am a Lecturer of Education (TESOL) and coordinate the MSc TESOL (Online) programme. I teach across our online and on-campus TESOL Master's programmes and carry out research in corpus linguistics and discourse analysis. As the Vice Chair of the Scottish Association for the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (SATEFL), I am also involved in nurturing a network of TESOL practitioners and researchers in Scotland.

I joined Stirling in October 2022 from the University of Birmingham, where I was based for several years and most recently coordinated the development of a new TESOL microcredential. Previously, I was part of the team developing the CLiC Web App, a corpus tool for studying patterns in literary texts at Birmingham’s Centre for Corpus Research. I have also worked at the University of Bath’s Department of Education, as part of their TESOL team.

External Examiners and Validations

External Examiner
I am the External Examiner for the distance programmes "TESOL with Corpus Linguistics" (distance learning; PT), "TESOL with Language Testing" (distance learning; PT), and "PGCert in TESOL" (distance learning; PT) at Lancaster University.

Research

My research interests span applied linguistics, corpus linguistics and digital humanities, and discourse analysis. In my current work, I am particularly interested in empowerment and creativity in educational and wider discourses, as well as applications of corpora and data-driven learning. While my research has been interdisciplinary, I have a strong research background in corpus linguistics, and am Assistant Editor for the International Journal of Corpus Linguistics.
