University of Stirling tennis ace Anna McBride has won the women’s singles at the Australian Open’s Intellectual Disability Championships event for the third consecutive year.
The second-year sports scholar defeated doubles partner Kelly Wren in the first round and Breanna Tunny in the semi-finals before securing a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Eva Blanc in the final. It was an outstanding win for McBride, who only dropped four games in her run to the title.
McBride, from Dunfermline, now has a hat-trick of Australian Open singles titles to her name – having won at Melbourne Park in 2023 and 2024 – however, she was unable to make it three-in-a-row in the doubles. In addition to her singles triumphs, the 21-year-old had also won the women’s doubles title at the previous two competitions – but, with Wren, this year finished runner-up in their group.

University of Stirling graduate Maia Lumsden also competed Down Under – playing in the Australian Open’s main competition. With Czech doubles partner Anna Siskova, Lumsden made round two, where the pair lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to number two seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe.
