Abstract
First paragraph: Early labour is a major challenge for providers of maternity care and for women and their families, in countries where hospital birth is the norm. While midwives strive to provide care that is safe, evidence based and cost effective, this does not always appear to be meeting women's needs (Spiby et al., 2006; Barnett et al., 2008; Nolan, 2009).
