Abstract
In this article we reflect on the Special Issue - on Global Fan Cultures - preceding it, considering the conference that gave rise to it, the role of Southampton in Jane Austen's life, and her global stature. We draw out the themes of immersion, gatekeeping, participation and remediation from the papers, and consider what these might tell us both about fan communities, and Austen's writing.
