Abstract
To promote psychosocial development of young people in sport, technology can offer new opportunities. Blended learning approaches to sport psychology provisions complement face-to-face engagement in the vicinity of training with online resources accessed remotely. An “elite-level” professional soccer club academy integrated a 4-week blended development program comprising video resources (topic introductions combining talking head narration with club footage) and interactive pitch-side learning checks (true or false quizzes, reflective questions, and group discussions). In total, responses from 13 male players of the under-15 and under-16 academy teams identified that the intervention supported preparation for performance and management of challenges, with the delivery format deemed clear and concise. Quantitative data from social validation questions indicated that players perceived the program as important in developing mental performance (M= 5.75, SD = 0.75) and that the blended learning format offered benefits through online learning content being available (M= 5.58, SD = 0.79). Qualitative data underwent content analysis to offer perceptions of effectiveness. Three academy staff were interviewed with findings indicating that the intervention was impactful through increasing the visibility of sport psychology, bringing content to life, and improving access. The staff advocated for increased integration with coaching practice, use of dedicated online platforms, and further enhancing engagement. This case illustrates how blended learning can be applied to youth soccer, with findings guiding practitioners to curate such programs.
