Abstract
This short paper outlines the work of the independent Sentencing and Penal Policy Commission. It highlights key issues facing Scotland’s justice system and presents high-level statistical trends on the country’s prison population and sentencing practices. This primer paper is the collective effort of the Commission which is made up of a Chair, Martyn Evans, and five Commissioners, Hannah Graham, Lynsey Smith, Cathy Jamieson, David Mackie, and Catherine Dyer, and a Commission Secretariat.
