Abstract
“Aquaculture” describes a set of diverse and complex animal and plant production systems which have many advantages in terms of human nutrition, environmental benefits compared to some other production systems and the possibility of future expansion as well as the economic and socio-economic benefits. In this paper we consider different types of production systems from low to high input and discuss where they are most common, the species produced in each, the types of technology required and what the risks and limitations are in each case. The presentation here is deliberately a broad summary with the references providing links to more specific detail of each topic discussed.
