Abstract
(First paragraph) The introduction of the euro in January 1999 is a crucial landmark in the history of European integration. Indeed, so enormous are its ramifications for the economic, political and regulatory frameworks within which we live that it would be no exaggeration to announce the single currency as one of the most important developments of this fading European century. Yet, its significance notwithstanding, as events built up towards the crucial decisions about the identity of the participants in the first wave of the euro, we became stuck by how little serious public debate and scholarly analysis there was in the United Kingdom about this development, most notably its legal dimension.
