Abstract
First paragraph: Crossing the strait between Vancouver Island and Salt Spring Island in June 2017 following the annual Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing (SHARP) conference, the two authors of this article, both researchers in contemporary publishing studies, fell into a conversation with a stranger. 'What I really love,' the woman said, 'is the smell of books.' 'Oh look, a ferry,' one of us replied. This diplomatic non-sequitur has since become something of a catchphrase in our research.
