Rob Angell is Professor of Marketing at Stirling Business School, University of Stirling, and Associate Dean International. He previously held academic positions at the Universities of Southampton, Cardiff and Plymouth.
His principal programme examines the unexpected consumer consequences of digital products and technology (e.g. why using two digital devices simultaneously can improve advertising recall rather than impair it; why launching a physical counterpart alongside an existing digital product can reduce sales; why two-sided review systems lead customers to work harder to present themselves favourably; why digital-only access to services can trap rather than liberate consumers), and, at the organisational level, how firms can deploy, govern and measure technology to improve performance and decision-making — evidenced through a portfolio of Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, the annual State of Martech benchmarking programme, the MartechIQ diagnostic tool, and the Mosaic Project think tank.
Alongside this, Rob maintains a long-running, and active interest in how retailers and manufacturers design food choice environments by understanding how consumers make decisions in these situations. His research has examined ethical and local-food purchasing, older consumers’ grocery-shopping behaviour, healthy-food presentation and packaging, rural food retailing, and consumer-led approaches to reducing food waste. This works has been supported by funding from the Leverhulme Trust, the National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise and the Croatian Science Foundation.
Rob’s research has been published in outlets including the International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Retailing, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Business Research and Psychology & Marketing. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Advertising Research and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Retailing, Journal of Advertising and Psychology & Marketing.
Rob is the founder and Chair of the Scotland Marketing Network, a national academic network that convenes research seminars, supports scholarly exchange and celebrates excellence in marketing across Scotland. He is also co-founder of 1541, an independent platform that translates marketing knowledge for practitioners, educators, students and graduates.
