Abstract
FIrst paragraph: The study of wage rates has always been a central part of industrial relations and labour economics. In all but exceptional cases, however, British investigators have focused their attention upon the pay of manual or blue-collar workers. To take one example, the standard British econometric wage equations include Mulvey (1976) and Mulvey and Foster (1976) using sectoral data, Blanchflower (1984) and Stewart (1987) using data on the establishment, and Layard, Metcalf and Nickell (1978), Stewart (1983) and Shah (1984) using individual data. Of these only Layard, Metcalf and Nickell (1978) separately examines non-manual remuneration.
