Abstract
During a recent visit to Taiwan, the present writer was asked about the definition and application of the concept of amiable composition in international commercial arbitration. While such a concept has been adopted in Article 31 of the Taiwanese Arbitration Act 1998, this question not only puzzles the Taiwanese arbitration practitioners but also some practitioners from other countries. This article is intended to provide a picture of the concept of amiable composition, how such concept is applied by international arbitrators and its reception in France, the United States, and England.
