Abstract
Humour, albeit caustic, is central to the works of Virginie Despentes and Chloé Delaume, two important figures in contemporary French literature. This article will demonstrate that this sarcastic laughter has two main functions as a feminist issue. Through irony and parody, it both denounces the system of masculine domination and circumvents the traditional exercise of power. Feminist laughter, which implies particular shared beliefs, cannot be seen either as a mere provocation or as merely an embittered observation. Rather, it constitutes an entertaining and uninhibited means of resistance, one which is still perceived as threatening by some readers.
