Abstract
The Co-operative Commission argued that there is a positive 'co-operative advantage' to a co-operative, from having members rather than investor-owners. But can large-scale co-operatives and mutuals successfully involve members? What motivates people to take part in governance? This report presents the findings from a project asking members of area committees and inactive members why they do or do not participate.
