Abstract
This pamphlet results from the Assessment Systems for the Future project, funded by the Nuffield Foundation. The project was set up by the Assessment Reform Group in September 2003 to consider evidence from research and practice about the summative assessment of school pupils, and to propose ways in which such assessment can benefit their education. The role that assessment by teachers can take in summative assessment was the project's particular focus.
