Abstract
This chapter reviews the anatomical and physiological adaptations which occur in almost every body system throughout pregnancy. The midwife's understanding of the changes and her ability to recognise deviations from the normal is fundamental in the management of all pregnancies, enabling her to provide appropriate midwifery care to each woman, inlcuding those affected by a pre-existing illness
