Abstract
A schematic map is a diagrammatic representation based on linear abstractions of networks. Schematic maps can be used as visualization tool to help ease the interpretation of information by the process of cartographic abstraction especially in network datasets. This paper looks into the interoperability challenges in the implementation of web services technology for map schematization. Web services are collective tools for accessing data and performing operations over the web. The paper details the implementation of web services technology for automated schematization using open standards. Also, it details key issues involved in improving interoperability by structuring the most important concepts in schematization. Finally, it looks into how an open standards based persistent test bed approach can be effectively used as a benchmarking platform for evaluating different optimization algorithms in map schematization.
