Abstract
First paragraph: The demands of the timber, paper, and pulp industries have heavily simplified and degraded forests worldwide. Global deforestation continues at an alarming rate, as forests are cleared for agriculture or harvested unsustainably. Pressures on forests will not disappear anytime soon, and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) expects croplands in the developing world to expand over the next three decades. The destruction of forests has a heavy impact on the welfare of poor and vulnerable populations and contributes to climate change and to the loss of biodiversity. According to the World Bank, in 2004 more than 1.6 billion people depended to varying degrees on forests for their livelihoods, and a significant number of people living in poverty relied on forests for much of their fuel, food, and income.
