Abstract
First paragraph: Aquatic plants constitute a small ecological group with distinctive evolutionary processes, novel physiologies, impressive life cycles, diverse reproductive patterns, partially high primary production rates and key structuring roles in shallow lakes, but also potential for mass developments impeding human use of water bodies. These features make macrophytes an important group in the study of many different fields and also in environmental management. Aquatic plants have inspired many and diverse interests and several journals are devoted to different kinds of research on aquatic plants.
