First paragraph: More than ten years on from the 2008 global financial crisis, housing remains in crisis in Scotland in terms of supply, quality and affordability. At the same time, barriers to accessing housing continue to contribute to housing inequality in Scotland. In this chapter, we argue that housing inequality is not merely the result of blind, impersonal market forces, but rather and more importantly a consequence of deliberate policies which have protected a market-based approach to housing rather than one driven by regarding housing as a right where homes are to satisfy human need.
