Abstract
First paragraph: Educational stakeholders are encountering a need for multiliteracies, multi-modal literacy pedagogy and multimodality as a result of the rapid evolution of ways of learning in the 21st century. This volume unpacks the complexity of language, multiliteracies and multimodality from an arts-based perspective, focusing on early childhood. This edition (2017) builds upon the tremendous international success of the first edition, edited by Marilyn J Narey (2009), which explored the intersection of multimodality and art within and beyond the classroom. International scholars present timely theoretical, methodological and practical views of the affordances and constraints of meaning-making through the arts, contributing case studies and powerful pedagogical perspectives for educational stakeholders that explore the importance of merging visual arts with multimodal literacy within early childhood education.
