Abstract
First paragraph: In an era when new studies of the Scottish Enlightenment seem to be an almost monthly occurrence, it is surprising to find a major figure lacking their own book-length biography. Until Jeffrey Smitten's work, however, such was the case for William Robertson, with the only earlier biographical attempt being Dugald Stewart's 1801 Account of the Life and Writings of William Robertson. Scholars of the period will welcome this timely addition to the literature which provides an up to date and badly needed review of the life of one of the Enlightenment's best-known historians.
