Abstract
First paragraph: In the summer of 2011 I travelled from Scotland to Victoria, Australia to undertake a project entitled 'Lessons from the other side'. The aim of the project was to ascertain how Health Promoting Palliative Care (HPPC) had evolved in Victoria and to understand what lessons could be learned from this. 'Lessons from the other side' encompassed not only the geographical nature of the project but related to my own position as a remote and rural general practitioner seeking to widen my own view of palliative care to encompass a public health perspective.
