Abstract
First paragraph: We allow legalised violence against our offspring to continue at our peril, says Elaine E. Sutherland. The United Kingdom legal system does not even try to protect children from all violence. Parents are given a defence, when charged in respect of violent acts committed against their children, that what they did amounted to "reasonable chastisement". Essentially, this allows bigger, stronger people to inflict violence on smaller, weaker people.
