Lord McConnell of Glenscorrodale, former First Minister of Scotland and a graduate of the University of Stirling, will give a public lecture at the University on his journey from Student Union President to First Minister and why voting in upcoming elections matters.
Lord McConnell served as President of Stirling University Students' Association between 1980 to 1982 as well as Vice-President of the National Union of Students (NUS) Scotland in 1982 to 1983. He graduated in 1983 and after a long established political career became First Minister in 2001 to 2007.
Lord McConnell, said:“I’m looking forward to returning to where it all began and talking about my journey from Student Union President to First Minister of Scotland.”
“Stirling students will vote soon in the Student Union Election and the Scottish General Election and a referendum on UK membership of the EU. Today, many people across the world are still denied the right to vote so we should celebrate and use this democratic privilege.”
This lecture is part of a debate series held in advance of the May 2016 Scottish Elections. The series is supported by the University of Stirling’s Stirling Fund and is hosted jointly by the Students’ Union and the University’s Scottish Political Archive, where papers and political archives on Lord McConnell’s political career are stored.
Lord McConnell will be speaking on Monday 15 February at 6.30pm in Lecture Theatre B4, Cottrell Building, University of Stirling. The free lecture is open to all.
