The Rt Hon. the Lord McConnell of Glenscorrodale shared his thoughts and insights with Arts and Humanities students, at a recent Final Year Conference held at the University of Stirling.

In his address, the former First Minister of Scotland who is an alumnus of the University spoke of the great value of an Arts and Humanities degree.  He discussed how, in a fast-changing world filled with conflict, uncertainty and great opportunities, society needs graduates with the communication and analytical skills this type of degree provides.

The event brought together all disciplines within the University’s School of Arts and Humanities, giving students in their honours year pause for thought - as to what they wanted to achieve over their last year of academic study.  It also gave students the opportunity to consider what their plans would be after graduation.

Lord McConnell was joined by academic and careers staff speakers, as well as a number of speakers from outside the University – including employers, specialist skills trainers and alumni of the University – who came to share their expertise and experience with the students.

Alison Green, Director of Learning and Teaching for the School of Arts and Humanities, said: “We were delighted to stage this major conference for our students, to give them the best possible start to their final year.

“The event was supported by employers and alumni with whom we work closely throughout the year, to ensure our students have the closest possible links and support from the business sector. Lord McConnell spoke with passion and insight to the students and we were very grateful to him for taking the time to support this event”.
