University of Stirling student Ross Murdoch wins Gold for Scotland. The University of Stirling has sent its congratulations to one of its students, Ross Murdoch, who won a Gold and Bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Murdoch, 20, from Balfron, near Stirling, won the 200m Breaststroke Final and finished third in the 100m Breaststroke.
After an emotional 200m Breaststroke medal ceremony, he said: “I will remember this moment for the rest of my life, especially as I was able to do it in front of my family, my friends, my girlfriend and this amazing home crowd.”
Professor Gerry McCormac, the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University, said: “We’re delighted at Ross’s success. He is an amazing ambassador for the University and Scottish Swimming and manages a punishing schedule in the gym and the pool. His hard work and dedication has certainly paid off and it was great to see him win Gold and Bronze medals at Glasgow 2014.
“We’d like to pass on our congratulations to Ross and his family on this amazing success.”
His words were echoed on Twitter by Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Addlington who tweeted to Ross: “Huge congratulations”.
Tennis star Jamie Murray added on the social network: “Take a bow @RossMurdoch_ What a race! #smashedit Great night in the pool for @Team_Scotland Congrats to all our medallists!”
Murdoch, originally from West Dunbartonshire, has been studying for a Sport and Exercise Science degree at the University of Stirling.
He is being supported by Winning Students, Scotland’s national sports scholarships for student athletes. The scholarships are designed to help students combine their sport and studies to excellent effect, and for Murdoch, he is benefitting greatly from the scholarship’s flexible approach, taking a year out from his degree to fully focus on his swimming.
