Students from across the Highlands and Islands graduated from the University of Stirling today.

The University staged its winter graduation ceremony in Inverness at St. Andrew’s Cathedral.

Around 125 people received awards from University Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Gerry McCormac.

The majority of graduates studied at the University’s campuses in Inverness and Stornoway.

For some, the ceremony was a real family affair. Seonaid MacKay and her daughter Fiona - both nurses from the Coll, near Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis - graduated together.

Seonaid, who works as a theatre nurse in Stornoway, will collect a Master's degree in Health Research. Her daughter Fiona will graduate with a BSc in Nursing. Fiona works as a community staff nurse in the East Community Team, based in Stornoway.

"It's lovely for us to be graduating together," said Seonaid. Fiona, a former pupil of Stornoway's Nicolson Institute, said: "I followed my mum into nursing, and into studying with the University. It's been great studying at the same time as my mum. We have been able to help and support each other."

Father and son Fraser and Stuart Ross, both from Inverness, also graduated at the same time. Fraser was awarded a BSc in nursing. Meanwhile, his son, Stuart, received a BSc in Professional Practice (Unscheduled Care). Fraser now works with a community mental health team, based in Dingwall, whilst Stuart works in the renal unit at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.
