New artworks on show at the University of Stirling are to be auctioned off to help develop a school in eastern Africa.

Paintings, ceramics, jewellery and sculptures from a range of Scottish artists went on show at the University’s Pathfoot Building on Monday.

They will be auctioned off on Friday 6 December to raise money to develop and build the Ntimbanjayo Memorial School of Excellence in Tanzania.

Lindsey Donald from the University said: “The items for auction are currently on display in the Crush Hall of our Pathfoot Building. They range from beautiful paintings to stunning jewellery. I’d encourage local people to drop into the campus and see the works on display.

“The auction and exhibition is open to anyone and we’re hoping to raise lots of money for Ruvuma Development Aid (RUDA), the Scottish charity that’s supporting the development of the Ntimbanjayo Memorial School. The doors open for the auction at 5 pm on 6 December, with the auction starting at 7 pm."

For those who cannot attend the live auction, bids can be placed by filling in the forms in the exhibition space and posting them in a sealed envelope in the box provided. Bidders will be contacted by phone after the auction if their bids have been successful.

Said Lindsey: “All the work in the auction has been donated by artists who believe in the school project’s ability to change lives by giving disadvantaged children the benefit of a really good primary education.

“In this rural area of Tanzania there are few good schools and even the private schools can have up to 100 children per class with insufficient books or resources.

“This auction is an opportunity to invest in a piece of work by some of our best contemporary Scottish artists, while at the same time supporting the completion of a new school dormitory. The works on offer will make fantastic Christmas gifts – and taking part in the auction will be a great way to help people less fortunate than ourselves at this time of year.”
