Scholarship swimmer receives Olympic and Commonwealth Boost

Back to news

The 20-year-old Accountancy and Business Law student is the first swimmer to receive funding support as part of Scottish Swimming’s Back A Rising Star programme.

He will join many of his Stirling team-mates at the British Gas Swimming Championships, which start on Saturday 3 March at the Aquatics Centre in London.

Scott, who trains at the British Gas Intensive Training Centre on the University campus, won a silver medal for Team Scotland in the 200m freestyle relay at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

He was also part of the British men’s freestyle relay team which made the 2011 World Championship final in Shanghai and competed at the European Short Course Championships in Poland.

Scott will receive £30,000 over three years courtesy of support from Fife-based consulting services company, ForthRoad Limited, building on support from the University and from national sports scholarships Winning Students.

He said: “ForthRoad have been extremely generous with their donation. Their belief makes me want to work all the harder toward my swimming ambitions. My swimming journey is about growing as an athlete and as a person.

“I am lucky to be supported by such a creative firm, and look forward to the opportunities that may come from connecting with experts in the field of facilitation and coaching outside the pool such as those from ForthRoad. I encourage Scottish individuals, community groups and companies to get behind their very own Scottish Swimming rising star.”

Ashley Howard, Chief Executive Officer of Scottish Swimming, said: “This programme is about connecting our hard-working, dedicated athletes with the Scottish community. We have role models walking our streets, committed to excellence in every session they have in the pool and in the gym.”
