Nurse Education Provider of the Year

The University of Stirling has been named Nurse Education Provider of the Year for pre-registration nursing at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2016.

The team from the Faculty of Health Sciences and Sport were awarded the highly prestigious title at a ceremony in London. The programme was commended for its outstanding delivery of education to undergraduate nursing students.

The esteemed judging panel said: “One student told us that this winning university was regarded as the best to undertake a nursing degree.  The placements are varied, the mentors are excellent and if you embrace the opportunity to learn you will succeed.”

Final-year student Robert Murray also picked up the award for Student Nurse of the Year: Mental Health. The inspirational 28-year-old has excelled academically and in practice. His passion for mental health nursing as a priority in health and social care and his drive and commitment saw him clinch the much-deserved title.

Robert, of Falkirk, said: “I’m extremely proud to be part of the University of Stirling nursing programme and to have been recognised at these awards. I’m grateful to everyone who has supported me.

“Mental health nursing is a vital part of the care nurses provide and an area that is not discussed and highlighted enough. Through this award, I’m pleased to shine some light on the work that’s done with people with mental health concerns.”

Robert was one of six Stirling student nurses and teaching staff to be nominated at this year’s awards.

The Student Nursing Times Awards are the only awards to celebrate the very best in student nurses and nurse education, recognising educational establishments and honouring those who are committed to developing new nursing talent.

Professor Jayne Donaldson, Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences and Sport, said: “The Student Nursing Times Awards are an opportunity for us to celebrate our dedicated team of student nurses and teaching staff here at the University.

“It’s with great honour that we accept the award for Pre-Registration Education Provider of the Year and a real joy to see our student Robert Murray recognised for the exceptional work he does within mental health nursing. These awards are testament to the quality of teaching that takes place at Stirling to help develop confident, highly trained nurses that will go on to improve the health of our communities.”

Jenni Middleton, Editor, Nursing Times, said: “If you are training to be a nurse or are already a nurse, you are a pretty exceptional person. It is an incredibly tough job. It is an amazingly rewarding profession. And it takes someone incredibly special to do it. It takes skill, it takes knowledge, it takes hard work, it takes dedication, and it takes commitment to be a nurse. At Nursing Times, we want to support nurses to be the best they can be. Our Nursing Times Awards winners and Student Nursing Times Awards winners are role models of what hard work, commitment and talent can see you achieve.”
