Kinza decided to study MSc Human Resource Management at the University of Stirling after a number of years working in HR in Pakistan to gain skills in strategy and evidence-based decision making.

Opportunity to connect academic learning with real workplace challenges

One of the main highlights of studying MSc Human Resource Management at Stirling was the opportunity to connect academic learning with real workplace challenges. Having already worked in HR for several years, I found that the course helped me look at my experience from a more strategic and evidence-based perspective.

I particularly enjoyed the HR consultancy project, where I explored employee experiences of remote and hybrid working for an organisation. It gave me practical experience in analysing workplace issues, identifying themes from employee feedback and developing realistic recommendations.

Learning alongside students from different countries and professional backgrounds

Modules such as Employment Relations, HR Analytics, Resourcing and Talent Management and Strategic and Operational HRM were especially valuable. The teaching encouraged discussion, critical thinking and the practical application of HR theories. I also enjoyed learning alongside students from different countries and professional backgrounds, as this brought a wide range of perspectives into classroom discussions.

I did not complete a formal placement as part of my degree. However, I gained valuable practical experience through the HR consultancy project and several university roles alongside my studies.

The consultancy project allowed me to work with organisational information, analyse employee feedback and develop recommendations based on research and evidence.

Alongside my studies, I also worked as a Student Ambassador and served as the Postgraduate Faculty Officer for Stirling Business School. These experiences strengthened my communication, leadership, organisation and stakeholder engagement skills. They also taught me how to represent the views of others, manage different responsibilities and work confidently with people from varied backgrounds.

My contribution to the University community was recognised through the My Stirling Award (Honorary), which was a particularly meaningful achievement for me.

A very special place to study and spend time

I really enjoyed campus life at Stirling. The beautiful surroundings, especially the loch and the peaceful atmosphere, made it a very special place to study and spend time. I loved walking around the campus and enjoying the calmness of the natural environment.

I also made good use of the University’s start of the art sports facilities and enjoyed playing badminton with friends. Attending events organised by different clubs and societies gave me opportunities to meet new people, experience different cultures and feel part of Stirling’s diverse and welcoming student community.

Before beginning my MSc, I had approximately six years of HR experience in Pakistan. The degree helped me build on that experience by developing my understanding of strategic HRM, evidence-based decision-making, UK employment practices and people analytics.

It strengthened my ability to analyse organisational challenges, use data to support decisions and consider how HR practices affect both employees and organisational performance. Since completing my studies, I have been able to apply these transferable skills in my role as a Student Administration Assistant at the University of Stirling while continuing to pursue my long-term career in HR.

Helped me become more adaptable and confident

Studying at Stirling also helped me become more adaptable and confident. Moving to a new country, studying within an international cohort and balancing academic work with employment and university responsibilities prepared me well for working in diverse and changing environments.

Studying at Stirling can offer much more than a qualification

My advice would be to make the most of every opportunity available to you, not only within your course but across the wider University. Take part in events, apply for student roles, speak to your lecturers and connect with people from different backgrounds.

Studying at Stirling can offer much more than a qualification. If you become actively involved, it can help you grow personally, professionally and academically. Do not be afraid to step outside your comfort zone as the experiences you gain along the way may become some of the most valuable parts of your journey.
