Community Code for students living in University accommodation

The Community Code is designed to ensure that you and others in your household have an enjoyable stay in university accommodation and everyone adheres to the latest guidance from the Scottish Government on preventing the spread of COVID-19.

It includes guidelines on the application of Government and University guidance in your accommodation.

These rules are about showing respect for others living in your household and promoting the health and wellbeing of the community you are part of:

Your Responsibilities

Staying safe and preventing the spread of COVID-19 is everyone's job. Our whole community must follow public health guidance.

Please remember that the Scottish Government Guidelines apply to all students and staff.

If you break the rules and refuse to follow the instructions given by University staff you will be subject to the University’s Code of Student Discipline. By breaking the rules you are putting others at risk, your accommodation contract could be terminated, and you will be required to leave university accommodation.

The NHS Inform website is an extremely useful and important source of information at this time – please check it regularly. You should follow the advice it provides.

You and your flatmates will be considered a household and the guidance for households should be followed at all times. Follow social distancing rules when you are out and about, follow good hygiene protocols at all times and keep your household safe. Your co-operation will create a safe and pleasant living environment for everyone.

During the first 10 days of semester, you'll be asked to follow strict guidelines on the use of common areas. This will be supported by visits from Accommodation Services to make sure that all students are following the community code.

For the first 10 days of semester:

  • We recommend you observe social distancing, even within your flat
  • You must follow the cleaning regime required in your flat
  • You must not have visitors in your accommodation for 10 days

Protecting yourself and others you live with

  • Follow good personal hygiene washing your hands regularly
  • Clean shared areas, kitchens/shower rooms/toilets before and after every use
  • Wash, dry and put away dishes as soon as possible after use
  • Take out rubbish daily, double-bagging waste where necessary to prevent spills

Helping each other

  • If you know of someone who is self-isolating check in with them, via phone or social media, to see if they need anything. If you are concerned, don’t hesitate to contact your nearest staff reception.
  • Be considerate of your flatmates – follow the rules
  • Let us know if you think you have symptoms of COVID-19

After this time you are an established household and must follow the guidance, particularly if you or another member of your household is required to self-isolate, either because you are displaying signs of COVID-19, or are instructed to do so by NHS Test and Protect.

Rules for visitors

To reduce your risk the Scottish Government advise you:

  • keep a safe distance from people not in your household, especially indoors – the greater the distance the greater the protection
  • meet outdoors if possible, as this is safer than meeting indoors
  • avoid crowded places
  • open windows if you meet inside - the more fresh air you let in the safer it will be

When meeting indoors students must:

  • Wash their hands on arrival, throughout their visit and when they leave.
  • Maintain 1m distance from anyone not in their household.
  • Limit the number of visitors at any one time to avoid a crowded flat.
  • Keep the rooms they are in well ventilated.
  • Maintain hand and cough hygiene.
  • Avoid touching hard surfaces with your hands.
  • Not share food or utensils.

Students are not currently permitted to have overnight visitors in their accommodation. The rules on overnight visitors will be reviewed one month after the start of semester.

Rules for common areas

Cleaning and washing hands regularly and thoroughly are the principal hygiene controls for the COVID-19 virus. Cleaning regimes are in place for public areas on campus. You will have housekeeping support in your flat but the daily cleaning regime is shared between you and your flatmates.

  • You should clean all surfaces before and after use, especially in the shared kitchen and toilet/shower facilities. Do not leave dirty dishes and keep the kitchen worktops clear
  • Remove rubbish from the flat daily and place in the external bins, recycling what you can
  • If you have any concerns about the hygiene in your flat you should discuss the matter with your flatmates in the first instance and agree your “flat rules”.  If any difficulties continue please let us know and we will assist all we can
  • If necessary, a rota will be implemented to allow safe use of shared areas like kitchens, toilets and showers. All students must follow the “clean before and after use” rule
  • You should respect social distancing guidance in your accommodation, especially for the first 10 days of semester
  • University accommodation staff are on hand 24/7 to support and assist you

Rules if you have to self-isolate

If you feel unwell you will find current advice in the NHS Inform Self-help guide.

If you are required to or decide to self-isolate please let the University know by completing this short online form or via the University of Stirling app.

If you have to self-isolate in your accommodation you should:

  • Read the current advice available via the NHS Inform Stay at home guide
  • Let the University know by completing this short online form or via the University of Stirling app
  • Draw up a kitchen rota with your flatmates so you are not all using the kitchen at the same time. You should not use the kitchen at the same time as anyone else.
  • If you have symptoms stay in your room as much as possible and eat your meals in your room
  • Carry out regular handwashing and cleaning of accommodation areas (in particular surfaces that you all regularly touch)
  • Take extra care cleaning the kitchen and washing your dishes
  • We will provide waste bags
  • Double bag all rubbish daily. After 72 hours please take your rubbish to the external bin. Remember to wear a face covering, take care to avoid contact with others and wash your hands. Please dispose of rubbish between 11am and 1pm each day.
  • Keep all dirty laundry until after your isolation. It must be kept in a sealed laundry bag for 72 hours before being removed for washing, once your isolation has ended
  • Check in on each other regularly (via phone/social media for those who have symptoms)

Read more guidance on how to self-isolate.

How to get food/groceries and supplies?

  • Ask a friend to shop for you
  • Have food/groceries delivered directly to your flat as usual, keep your distance from the delivery drivers and others
  • See our guide to local food delivery options

What to do if there is a fire alarm activation

  • You should evacuate as normal, keeping your distance from others as much as practical at the muster point. Do not return until advised to do so by a member of staff or the fire service

Please behave responsibly to limit accidental activations

  • Taking extra care when cooking. DO NOT SMOKE in the building, do not use kettles, etc. in your room, only activate self-heating pots in the kitchen, release the steam before taking to your room to eat

What do to if you smoke and are self-isolating

You can go outside to smoke but stay well away from all the buildings and away from other people and adhere to government guidelines. If you want to use this time to give up smoking this resource might help.
