Graduates of the LLM;MSc in Financial Services Regulation will be well placed to pursue careers in the global financial sector, including regulatory authorities.  Expert staff within the Stirling Law School and Division of Accounting and Finance have come together to offer an innovative and distinctive multi-disciplinary degree which will provide graduates with developed understanding and knowledge of both financial regulation and key areas of finance.

Programme Objectives

  • To provide graduates with advanced subject specialist knowledge, understanding and skills at taught masters level, appropriate to careers in Financial Services or related areas
  • To develop students’ appreciation of the international dimensions of Financial Services Regulation and Finance
  • To provide the academic foundation for progression to PhD level study.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants normally require a good Honours degree, or equivalent academic or professional qualification. Successful applicants will also be expected to demonstrate numerical and analytical abilities. Note that students must register for either the LLM or the MSc: the content and learning outcomes of both degrees are, however, identical.

English Language Requirements

If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of your proficiency such as a minimum IELTS score of 6 (minimum 5.5 in each skill), or TOEFL: Listening 21, Reading 22, Speaking 23, Writing 21.

Structure and Content

The programme is multi-disciplinary and consists of eight taught modules which are delivered by the Stirling Law School and the division of Accounting and Finance. A combination of specialist law and finance modules are taken in both the Autumn and Spring Semesters and students will also complete a 10,000-word law dissertation over the period 1 June to the middle of August.

Spring semester

  • Legal Research Methods
  • Law of Banking and Finance
  • Derivatives
  • Investments and Portfolio Management 
Summer semester
  • Financial Services Regulation Dissertation

 

Delivery and Assessment

Teaching is delivered via a combination of lectures, workshops and seminars. Assessment is by class tests, essays and final examinations which take place at the end of each semester. The coursework assessment methods and format of final examinations vary according to the specific requirements of each module. Every effort is made to develop relevant key transferable skills in the delivery of teaching and the design of assessments.

In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), 5% of research in the Stirling Law School was judged to be world leading, 65% of international standing, with the remaining 30% of at least national quality. In the division of Accounting and Finance, 90% of research was considered to be of international standing.
