MSc Investment Analysis

I was born in York and boarded at St Peter’s School while my father was working for the Government in Hong Kong. As head of my house, I also represented my school at first team level for hockey, rugby and cricket.

Following a ‘gap’ year working for Peat Marwick in Hong Kong, I went to study Accountancy and Economics at Lancaster University, where I played pool for my college and “drank for Yorkshire because Lancastrians couldn’t drink!” After graduation I landed my first job with a Hong Kong broking company and gained useful skills dealing in currency markets.

In 1991 I began work as an investment manager for the Homeowners’ Friendly Society in Harrogate. Although the Society was very successful during my time there, I did not have time to progress professional qualifications as far as I would have wished. As Stirling’s MSc in Investment Analysis was the only such degree in the country to provide exemption from the investment management exam, I decided to invest some of my own savings in registering to study at Stirling.

After completing my studies at Stirling, I joined Yorkshire-based stock broking firm BWD Rensburg (now Rensburg Sheppards) as an Investment Manager. Managing discretionary funds for wealthy individuals and small corporate clients, the focus of my work is on fund management rather than client relations. I also sit on the Asset Allocation Committee which decides the mix of equities, bonds and other assets for the Group, as well as selecting recommended funds (equities, bonds and overseas markets) for the Group. Successive promotions within the Group led to me becoming Senior Investment Director in 2002.

Living near York, I enjoy the quality of life of my local area, go to the horse-racing and follow the fortunes of Liverpool FC. My Stirling degree required considerable hard work, but I believe it was worth the effort as I’ve been able to adapt academic learning to the practicalities of my chosen career and been able to achieve rapid professional advancement.
