I chose to study Mental Health Nursing after being inspired by my mum who often spoke about nursing as a rewarding career with endless opportunities. I wanted to be able to make a positive impact by caring for and acting as an advocate for patients during periods of ill health, and to also ultimately work towards changing societal attitudes of mental health.
The course itself included an equal balance of theory and clinical practice. The supportive and knowledgeable staff not only taught us the foundations of nursing care, but also fundamental aspects of mental health, provided extensive skills training sessions, and developed our critical and reflective thinking skills.
The diverse range of placement areas has allowed me to maximise my potential by seeking learning objectives in a vast range of clinical settings. This has been enjoyable as it gives you a taste of the different areas and environments, whilst equipping me with invaluable skills, in which I look forward to contributing to the nursing profession in the near future.
