How did you find out about the internship?
I found out about the internship through the Careers and Employability Service’s 'Internship Week' event. I then went on the Stirling Internship webpages and found the internship there.
Please tell us more about your internship organisation.
Modus (Scotland) Ltd provides software and engineering services to industrial clients, many government bodies, NHS trusts and the life science sector, as well as many smaller organisations of all types.
What were the main tasks you were involved in during your internship?
My main tasks were to assist the system administration and support of several client companies, mostly based in the medical science sector. I was also involved in the extension of existing software products with new features, as well as the development of a new prototype Android app to replace pre-existing WWindows-basedsoftware.
What did you enjoy most about the internship and why?
The atmosphere at Modus was friendly and welcoming. I felt part of the team immediately and learnt a lot during my time there.
What skills have you gained and further developed from the internship experience?
I have gained a variety of skills pertaining to Windows system administration, which was something not covered by my degree.
What were the most beneficial aspects of the Stirling Internship Programme for you?
The main tasks I was involved in also gave me more confidence in my abilities. Having not done much work in my sector outside of academia, it was a relief to see that my skills transferred to the real world well.
What impact has this internship had on your personal development and your future career planning?
Getting to try my hand at a range of different things was a great benefit in deciding what kind of career I would like to pursue post-university.
What impact do you feel you have had on the organisation you have worked with?
Modus had recently taken on the task of setting up a new network for a company which was rapidly expanding. I offered a great deal of help during this busy time.
What do you see as the benefits of an internship with this type of organisation?
Working in a small company gave me more opportunity to make a real impact. I have also been able to use the company for research for my dissertation.
What advice would you give to students considering applying for an internship through this programme next year?
Don't give up! My internship came available at the last minute, just after I thought all hope was lost.
