How did you find out about the internship?
I found out about the internship through the Careers and Employability Service’s Stirling Internship Programme webpages.
Please tell us more about your internship organisation.
Destination Stirling is an alliance group which promotes the city of Stirling to tourists. I worked at the Old Town Jail tourist attraction, which is a historic jail offering the public a guided performance tour of the building.
What were the main tasks you were involved in during your internship?
I performed guided tours on a daily basis, portraying different historical figures linked with the jail and crime and punishment in Stirling. I also worked on the reception desk selling tickets and welcoming visitors to the attraction. In addition to this, I helped out with some of the administrative work for the attraction and the cash handling procedures.
What did you enjoy most about the internship and why?
I really enjoyed meeting tourists from all over the world and helping them make the most of their visit to Stirling. It was also really fun to act again as I really enjoyed drama in high school.
What skills have you gained and further developed from the internship experience?
I have been given an opportunity to experience working in the tourism industry, which has shown me what kind of service and experience visitors are looking for when they visit Scotland. I feel like my confidence has improved as I became comfortable with speaking and performing in front of many different people.
What were the most beneficial aspects of the Stirling Internship Programme for you?
The Stirling Internship Programme provided me with the opportunity to work in tourism and work as part of a great team of colleagues was brilliant.
What impact has this internship had on your personal development and your future career planning?
The internship has been a great opportunity to expand on my previous work experience and has made me consider working in this industry sector in the future. Furthermore, I was offered a job with the Scottish Tourism Alliance (STA) after I was recommended to them by my manager. I accepted the offer and I am now working as an administrator for the STA, whilst still working closely with Destination Stirling.
What impact do you feel you have had on the organisation you have worked with?
I feel that my hard work and organisational skills have had a good impact on the company.
What do you see as the benefits of an internship with this type of organisation?
I think that there are many benefits to working in the private sector and it is a great opportunity to find out how different businesses work.
What advice would you give to students considering applying for an internship through this programme next year?
Find something that you are interested in and that are keen to learn more about. It is a great experience to gain valuable skills and earn money during the summer break.
