I completed a History degree graduating in 1994. In my final year at university I was selected onto the fast track management training programme into the Department of Health based in London. This provided me with two years of fantastic general management training covering areas such as operations, finance, strategy, HR and included a six month secondment to a premier teaching hospital in New York City, USA.
Since then I have spent much of my career around major change and transformation programmes within the public and private sectors in both senior line management and consulting roles. I have worked on complex programmes that have included leadership development, technology enabled change, financial turnaround, service redesign and outsourcing. I have worked for companies such as Thames Water, BT and Capita where I currently work. I have tried to keep my skills and knowledge fresh and invested in some self-development. This included completing a full time MBA at Edinburgh University Business School.
I remember using the University of Stirling career advice service which now seems wise not least because it was a hive of information! My advice would be that pretty much any formal general management in any sector is a great grounding for most future careers.
